A Journey To Self-Reliance
Living on the train tracks for years takes its toll
In April 2018, Diana was chronically homeless, suffering from multiple health issues, and estranged from her family. Her only companion and consistent supporter was Jay, her faithful and loving golden retriever. Life on the Santa Ana train tracks was becoming increasingly dangerous, and Diana knew if she did not get out of there quickly, she might not survive another day.
Diana had recently reunited with her daughter and was working on rebuilding their relationship. Her daughter had heard of SAFEPlace, the emergency shelter program at WISEPlace, which is dedicated to serving women just like her mom. Her daughter picked up Diana and Jay and brought them to the welcoming arms at WISEPlace.
“I didn’t know where we were going,” Diana said. “Once we arrived, I was worried that they wouldn’t accept dogs.” Fortunately for Diana, WISEPlace recognizes the special love and support that these beloved animals provide and is one of the few local shelters that allows domestic pets. Diana tears up as she recalls her first day at WISEPlace.
“They offered to wash my clothes and I thought, this is amazing. These are little things you don’t think about — the most beautiful things. That’s what WISEPlace brought to me.” – Diana
Diana began down the long, hard road of learning to trust again. Our counselors and case managers stood by Diana every step of the way, and helped to rebuild her trust and confidence over the next several months. We provided counseling, veterinarian support for Jay, and other support services with the goal of ultimately finding her an apartment of her own.
In February 2020, homelessness ended for Diana. We secured a housing voucher and stabilized Diana’s income with Social Security Disability benefits and CalFresh food assistance. In addition, we helped with the deposit and provided household staples to help her settle in. With the keys to her new apartment and her daughter and Jay by her side, Diana is looking forward to a new beginning.
