Eight Years Without a Home
Most people could not imagine living in their car for eight days, let alone eight years. But that is how long Mirna lived in her car – through blistering hot days, freezing cold nights, and a global pandemic that made survival even more challenging for an unaccompanied woman experiencing homelessness.
Mirna used to own a home with her husband, but when they divorced in 2015, he sold the house without her permission. Out of the blue, she received a letter stating that she had three days to move out. With nowhere to go, she began living in her car. She used up all her savings trying to fight the sale in court, but her attorney took her money and never showed up.
She was working at a retail job that paid just enough to cover her basic expenses, but not enough to save for a security deposit or rent. She kept her gym membership so she could shower, but when COVID-19 hit, the facility closed. For months, Mirna used a gallon jug filled with cold water to wash herself.
Mirna looked for help at other shelters, but she was turned away again and again. No matter how many times she was told no, she was determined not give up. In February 2023, she found her way to WISEPlace and we welcomed her with open arms.
In our safe and supportive environment, Mirna could put all her energy and focus into looking for an apartment, a better paying job, and saving money.
We helped Mirna with her housing search and paperwork and in less than eight weeks at WISEPlace, her application was approved!
Mirna moved into her own apartment in March 2023. We provided her deposit and rental assistance for a year so she can continue to build up her savings. We also arranged for donations of furniture, small appliances, and household essentials to help her settle into her new home.
More exciting news – Mirna has a new job! She is working at a security company, which pays much better than her previous position. Your donations provided Mirna with a pair of tactical shoes that she needs for work – essential equipment that would have been very difficult to afford on her own.
“I was living in my car for years. In two months at WISEPlace, my whole life has changed. I have an apartment, a good job, and I feel safe for the first time in years. Thank you for giving me the resources, kindness, and compassion that I needed to succeed!” – Mirna
YOUR SUPPORT is the key to hope and housing for Mirna and other women in need!
