From Homelessness to Main Street U.S.A.
Did you know that 58% of the women WISEPlace served in 2019 were survivors of domestic violence? One of these survivors is Marina.
Surviving domestic violence, a battle with substances, sleeping on the street behind dumpsters, and pregnant with twins. This was Marina’s reality in 2017.
After giving birth, Marina knew that it was time to embrace sobriety and pull her life back together. Marina made the painful decision to temporarily give up her children knowing they would have a better life than she could provide at that time. She became hyper-focused on changing her life for the better, and walked into the welcoming arms at WISEPlace.
“I had so much anger and hate toward myself before I found WISEPlace, and I didn’t think I would amount to anything. I truly believed that I belonged in the gutter behind the dumpster. But, when you have the right program and support, you learn to love yourself — and that is very powerful. It was life changing!” – Marina Hodge
WISEPlace supported Marina throughout her journey toward self-reliance. She grew more confident as she benefited from the wraparound services that WISEPlace offers – transportation support to get to and from work, employment counseling, and financial assistance including her first months rent and deposit. After years of homelessness, Marina moved into her very own apartment for the first time!
“If it wasn’t for WISEPlace, I wouldn’t have had such a positive experience and been able to change my life for the better. From the case managers to advocates, everyone was always rooting me on and celebrating all my milestones. It was amazing to feel so supported and safe.” – Marina Hodge
Through hard work and a new found belief in herself, Marina achieved one of her dreams – working at Disneyland! Her journey from the streets to “Main Street, U.S.A.” has been filled with challenges and triumphs, and WISEPlace has supported her through it all. Working hard at the happiest place on Earth, she plans to use Disney’s tuition reimbursement support to pursue an education in business management – and looks forward to what the future holds.
