Diana was 70 years old when she first experienced homelessness. She fled an unsafe family situation and resorted to sleeping in her car alone night after night. Without a job, support system, or a home, Diana was scared and unsure where to turn for help.
Unfortunately, Diana’s story is not unique. Half of those experiencing homelessness in Orange County are over 50 years old. Many were working professionals who experienced a catastrophic illness, layoff, or family crisis that wiped out their savings and robbed them of their home. Alone on the streets, women are 5-10 times more likely to die or be assaulted than the general population.
Thankfully, Diana came to WISEPlace. With a safe place to sleep, healthy meals, and supportive services, she could focus on getting back on her feet again. Diana attended our group and individual counseling sessions, which helped her begin rebuilding her self-esteem and repairing her family relationships. With professional clothing and employment assistance from WISEPlace, she soon found work and began to build her savings.
Diana and our case manager met weekly to research housing and in December 2021, she was matched with a permanent housing opportunity. WISEPlace assisted with furniture for her new home and is providing follow-up case management to ensure a successful transition.
