You Gave Me Hope in My Darkest Days

My name is Janie and I’m the mother of four children. Being a young mom was not easy, and I struggled to make ends meet. I went through very tough times and hit rock bottom. Exhausted and vulnerable, I met someone and fell headfirst into a toxic relationship.
People who have never been in an abusive relationship may have a hard time understanding why I didn’t just leave at the first sign of trouble. The truth is that it’s not as easy as simply walking away.

He made me feel like I was powerless and that I had no control over my life. I was overwhelmed with negative emotions – fear, shame, intimidation, low self-esteem — that made me lose all my confidence and I was afraid what he would do if I pushed back. I tried to escape several times but would get pulled back in and each time I went back, it was worse.
One day, he attacked me and hurt me so badly that I was hospitalized. That was the final straw. I knew I had to get out or I would die. By this point, I had lost everything, including my children. Thankfully, they were able to stay with my mom, so I knew they were safe, but I missed them so much. I had to get my life back together and find a new home where I could have my children back with me again.
After reaching out to several agencies and programs, I came across WISEPlace. After years of abuse, coming to WISEPlace felt like a dream. Everyone was so supportive, and I began to heal mentally and physically. They immediately connected me with their rapid rehousing rental assistance program, and they worked with me to search for an affordable apartment.
“I was so determined to change my life and I got a job and started going to school. For the first time in years, I was excited about the future.” – Janie
Every struggle was worth it. In May 2023, I moved into my new home! I’m now working on getting my family back together and can’t wait to be reunited with my children.
“None of this would have happened without YOU! I was at the lowest point of my life when I came to WISEPlace and now I have a safe home, a job, and I’m going to school. Best of all, I will be able to have my children with me again. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for believing in me and for supporting WISEPlace. You literally saved my life, and I am forever grateful.” – Janie
